The Underground Lesbian Classic!
The Second Coming of Joan of Arc

Written and performed by Carolyn Gage, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc does more than tell a story; it provides a matrix. For most women, it has become a survival strategy to file away the memories of violations and failure, to treat each episode as an isolated phenomenon --- the result of an accident, a mistake, poor timing, bad judgement, bad luck. At The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, there is a tremendous synapsing going on as women in the audience begin to connect their own experiences with those of Joan. Unwrapping guilty secrets, shameful memories, trauma histories, women begin to see themselves in the matrices of Joan's story, and a pattern of betrayal emerges. The realization dawns that these seemingly random incidents constitute the intricately choreographed movements of a global conspiracy. And then the catharsis begins. Sponsored by the Sexual Assault Education Office, UVa Women's Center, and others.
Wednesday, October 30, 7:30 p.m., McLeod Hall Auditorium. Tickets: Non-students $10 ($12 at door) and Students $5 ($7 at door). Available after Oct. 4 at the UVA Women's Center (check or cash only), UVA Boxoffice and Plan 9 Records on University Avenue.

In honor of the late Susan Grossman, founding director of UVa's Center for Alcohol and Substance Education, Dr. Jean Kilbourne will present a talk examining advertising's assault on self-image, the selling of addictive products such as tobacco and alcohol, and the marketing of a mindset that often leads to unhealthy choices. Dr. Kilbourne is internationally recognized for her pioneering work on alcohol and tobacco advertising and the image of women in advertising. Cosponsored with CASE (Center for Alcohol and Substance Education), and the Department of Athletics, with generous additional funding from the Center for Leadership, Foundations and Policy of the Curry School, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Newcomb Hall Programs Council, UVA NOW, the Studies in Women and Gender Program, and Student Health.
