The University of Virginia Sexual Assault Education Office was created in 1991 to fulfill a need identified by University students, faculty and staff--to ensure that both education and intervention is available in order to reduce the prevalence and incidents of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence, and stalking that impacts students, faculty and staff.

We do our work through collaboration with student organizations, University offices and departments, and community agencies to:

  • educate students, faculty, staff, and parents about these issues,
  • ensure that survivors and their significant others receive support and care, and
  • review policies and procedures to make sure that they are implemented effectively.

Since 1991, we have worked with numerous survivors of sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking; sponsored and co-sponsored many educational events, held numerous self-defense workshops for women, worked with men as allies, coordinated the Sexual Assault Education Council, which still meets monthly, and has worked to raise awareness of these issues among the entire University community.

The SAEO is housed in the UVA Women's Center, presently located in The Corner Building at 14th and University Avenue.
